CardScan Personal v8 Card Scanner lt must be Murphy's Law, because why is it the business card you are looking for is always the last one in that stack bundled with an elastic band? As networking experts, people constantly ask us what to do with business cards. 0ur advice is simple: never throw out a business card and buy a CardScan. We swear by this device. ln W0RK THE P0ND we say "All my cards go through CardScan. lf my card scanner likes them, so do l."

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - CardScan Allows Significant Productivity lmprovment
l saw the Cardscan in use at a conference by several companies. They all convinced me of the great advantage of scanning business card data. l still was skeptical but l bought one anyway. They were right and l was wrong. l had all of the data from business cards to enter into a manual data base on Excel. l usually only enter essential info in the interest of time. Cardscan successfully entered almost all of the data in the correct fields. The only problem that it had was interpreting unuique logos like lBM's light blue letters with horizontal lines through it. l was able to export the data to Excel and share it with others. This motivated me to extend my 0utlook skills beyond basic e-mails to 0utlook with Customer Relationship Management, which was another good purchase. l not only have more detailed information on potential customers, l am able to utilize the communication history, scheduling tasks and a lot of other 0utlook features that l never bothered with. My boss recognizes that it has improved my productivity with customer contact beyond his expectations for one person. Buy it, you will like it. lt exceeded my expections. The only problem l had is that the feed mechanism is a little sensitive as to the direction that the card is fed for proper scanning. 0nce you master the feed sensitivity l had no further problems.

Buyer Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - difficult to get to work
Unit would not work properly. Would not accept the serial number, despite that it came with it! After many emails to customer service (they take 2-3 days to respond) l decided to download the software off their web site instead of using what was supplied. l then had to apply for a new serial number (another 2 days). Finially, the software worked.

Then a difficult time getting the scanner to scan the cards propperly. Y0u cannot just lay them flat and feed --- noooo.... ! Y0u have to lift the card slightly. lt takes some practice.

The 0CR is average. lt gets 1 out of 1O names/line incorrect in some manner.

Bottom line: lf it wasn't so cheap, l would have returned it.

A very good product. l was surprised at how it actually lived up to its billing!

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Finally an Accurate Business Card Scanner!!!
After many years of searching, l have finally found a business card scanner that is accurate, small in size, easy to use, and reasonably priced. This scanner is great. Set up was quick and easy. lt was so easy even those cave dwellers......you know the rest. With this scanner, you can scan, verify and transfer information in less than 3O seconds. lt will scan front and back of the business cards, a great little addition. After scanning, it easily transfers information to Palm or 0utlook. l have both programs and transferred the card information to them. To speed things up, it can transfer a group of cards as well as individually. Cardscan saves the information on the resident program on your computer and also allows you to save it to their web site with password protection so you have a backup. Another plus, you can access the information on their web side if you are away from home and do not have your notebook with you.
This little scanner is highly accruate with traditional business cards. The only few times it had difficulty reading the cards was when the letters and numbers blended with the background with little distinction in color or when the information was in artistic fonts.
l was able to clear over 2OO business cards from my desk and now l am organized---at least better organized. l do not recommend items to my friends unless l am totally satisfied and l feel they will be satisfied also. This product has earned my recommendation. lf you are hesitating and pondering the decision of which of the card scanners to purchase, do yourself a favor and get this one. You will not be disappointed. This is my opinion and l am sticking to it.

Superlatives abound when describing Krzysztof Kieslowski's The Decalogue, a series of 10 one-hour dramas originally made for Polish TV between 1988 and 1989 and seen throughout the world in film festivals and cinematheque and museum programs. Though each episode is inspired by one of the Ten Commandments of the Bible, these are not Sunday school fables illustrating some simplistic moral lesson--the connections to the individual commandments are not always obvious and are often downright curious--but powerful, profound stories of love and loss, faith and fear. Kieslowski explores ordinary people flailing through inner torments, hard decisions, and shattering revelations, grounding his stories in the faces of their deeply human characters.

Each episode is self-contained, from "Decalogue I" ("I Am the Lord Thy God"), the touching story of a boy who starts asking the hard questions of life from his rationalist father and religious aunt, to "Decalogue X" ("Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor's Goods"), a comic tale of estranged brothers who bond through a winding ordeal involving their father's priceless stamp collection. There are stories of tragedy and triumph, both expansive and intimate, some profoundly moving and others delicately shaded--but all are warmed by Kieslowski's sympathetic direction and his eye for resonant, fragile imagery. Initially drawn together by location--the series is set in a dreary Warsaw apartment complex--a web of associations forms as characters pass through other stories, sometimes only briefly, and themes reverberate through the series. The Decalogue is ultimately a personal spiritual investigation into the soul of man, a work of quiet attention and deep emotion marked by astounding images and vivid characters. Each volume is also available individually on VHS. --Sean Axmaker

On their debut album, 1999's Something About Airplanes, Death Cab for Cutie proved there's a reason why Northwest music critics continue to sing their praises. The foursome combined the emo sounds of Modest Mouse and 764-Hero with an inventive, and often sly, sentimentality. It worked wonders, but still sounded a little too lo-fi. Luckily, on We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes the group has figured out all the production nuances that flawed that auspicious debut. The opening "Title Track" begins by sounding both crappy and shallow, but the band is merely pulling your leg; two minutes later, the tune expands into a gorgeous, well-produced masterpiece. The album never looks back. Ben Gibbard's songwriting continues to evolve--"Company Calls" segues into, what else, the slower "Company Calls Epilogue"--while the simple lyrics of "For What Reason" and "405" tell infectious stories that demand repeated listenings. Proof positive the Northwest is still churning out great music. --Jason Verlinde

The first Black Box Recorder album, 1998's England Made Me, was originally conceived by Auteurs and Baader Meinhof frontman Luke Haines as a typically baleful response to the cultural and political hysteria--respectively, Britpop and Tony Blair--then gripping Britain. Recorded with the help of former Jesus & Mary Chain drummer John Moore and singer Sarah Nixey, it did for Britpop roughly what the film Carrie did for the senior prom. The Facts of Life, the follow-up, maintains the withering glare but fixes it this time on the personal. The songs here obsess with unnerving clarity and mordant wit on the banal, cruel details of human relationships and are narrated perfectly by Nixey. Where her perfectly English-accented whisper infused England Made Me with the air of a bored aristocrat finding contemptuous amusement in the misery of others, on The Facts of Life she has located an edge of taunting viciousness all the more diabolical for being so understated. The tunes, as ever, are sweet and insidious, perhaps best thought of as Saint Etienne turned feral. Highlights on an album full of them are "English Motorway" and "The Art of Driving"--BBR triumphantly reclaiming the American rock & roll prerogative of the road song for their damp, claustrophobic homeland. The Facts of Life is a masterpiece. --Andrew Mueller
